We are delighted that Siân has joined our BRIT Ambassador family.
Siân represented Great Britain in the bobsleigh between 2010 and 2018. During this time Siân was part of the 2012 Youth Olympic Squad, the 2012 & 2015 World Junior Championship squad and 2015 Senior World Championship squad, and was part of the 2018 Winter Olympic Long List.
“Having been a student at both The University of Birmingham for my bachelor's degree, and Swansea University as part of my master's degree, whilst training and competing with young elite athletes, I'm aware that many young adults and students face various mental health challenges. These challenges are being amplified by the current COVID-19 pandemic; particularly for those who are isolated and vulnerable. Whilst necessary measures to protect public health are reducing the impacts of COVID-19, the shadow side to these measures is the ongoing economic and social challenges, particularly for young adults, that threaten long-term health and wellbeing.
I'm pleased that BRIT have decided to promote, support and partner with four charities who provide vital support to students and young adults; PAPYRUS – Prevention of Young Suicide, Nightline Association, Student Minds and The Charlie Waller Trust; all donations raised will be shared equally between all five charities.
To ensure that every university, college and students’ union have the opportunity to enter teams in the BRIT 2021 Challenge, BRIT are striving to unite the Education, Sport and Charity sectors. This visionary and collaborative approach has huge potential if every university and college embraces the challenge, enters teams and opens up the opportunity to all their students and staff. I am delighted that BRIT have designed their BRIT 2021 Challenge to be inclusive so that students and staff of all abilities can take part. This year, teams have until the 1st July to complete 2,021 miles. There is no restriction to the size of the team and more than one team can enter from each institution.
I am an advocate for communication as a tool to maintain and improve mental health, and as such I would encourage fellow Great Britain athletes and our Bobsleigh and Skeleton squad members to use your voice and join me as BRIT Ambassadors- supporting students and staff at universities and colleges across the UK. I hope to inspire students and staff at the University of Birmingham and Swansea University to take on the BRIT 2021 Challenge, enter teams and raise vital funds”.
